Mind over Body…

The mind and the human brain are couple of the most vaguely understood things in general science. The biggest reason why we are not able to understand it is because its about the most basic and integral part of us that we attempt to learn.

Some of you might have heard from your friends that he is allergic to something, but then all of a sudden in a place where that thing is not present, he would start having an allergic reaction!!! Again sometime, you might tell a lie and act really well (in short convincing your self that you are sick) about being sick and then you end up being actually sick. Again You might hear that three of your friends who were with you for dinner the previous night were sick from the food and you would feel sick yourself though you would not have eaten the actual thing which might have made them sick.. Experienced that anyone???

The next statement I put here would create a lot of outrage amongst many readers but as always, please read till the end before you jump to conclusions. “The Mind is responsible for most diseases and ALL the ‘miracle’ healings”… When i put across this statement, it implies that, those sudden allergies you get, the headaches, migraines etc which at most points do not have an explanation are all play of the mind. Similarly the so called healers or faith healing are all manifestations of the same concept. As always, I am ready to give you solid reasons for why I say this. But first let me ask you this question: Do you believe, that pregnancy can be caused by the mind?? Ie, if a girl (or at times even a guy) really really wants a baby, can this translate into a pregnancy? If something as complicated as pregnancy is possible due to manifestation of the mind, then a trivial allergy or a minor cancer should be child’s play for it right!!!

Well my answer to the question above is both Yes and No. The mind cannot get a girl pregnant (which would anyway take the whole fun out of the process!! J ). But it can give you ALL the symptoms of pregnancy (which is the YES part of the answer). The stomach swells up, Breast enlargement, Nipple discolorations, the craving for the some food, arching of the back, periods stop and at times even the widening of the pelvis. Everything seems true except that, there wont be an actual baby in the womb.. There would only be gas and fat!!! Hard to believe??? It’s true. This phenomenon called fake pregnancy is known by the term pseudocyesis. Its a well documented medical phenomenon and has been first recorded in about 300 BC. As most people would have guessed, it is quite rare and occurs in about 2-3 cases per 10,000 actual pregnancies. The shocking part is that it has been even observed in males too!!! The symptoms are so accurate that most gynaecologists are unable to even distinguish between an actual pregnancy and a case of pseudocyesis unless the high tech gadgets like MRI and Ultrasonic kicks in, during which they see no babies in the womb!!!

Explanations for this range from demon pregnancies to alien impregnation to Ghost births… It is also accounted as virgin births. But there is a scientific explanation to this. This has been observed in people who have either been forced or compelled to get pregnant by friends and family or by people who really wanted to get pregnant. In the case of guys its been reported with males who extremely wanted to share emotional empathy with their pregnant female companions (heh heh heh, be warned guys..). How this happens is quite simple if taken at face-value. The mind decides it wants a baby. This thought somehow get physically translated and reduces the level of dopamine and norepinephrine which in turn reduce the production of FSH which starts off the cycle.. If the whole explanation is to be given, it would render the post unreadable due to the medical terminologies. Anyway summary: mind wants baby -> mind kick starts some things -> all symptoms come alive -> since no sperm, No baby is actually there -> end of story.

Now the reason I went on to explain this much about pregnancy is due to the fact that pregnancy is one of the most complicated physical transformation and that too in a timed fashion. Unlike an allergy, tumour or a cancer, which usually just involves one small change, pregnancy involved so many. Another experiment conducted at the Mcmaster university on mice showed that the mind can indeed create diseases for the body. In this experiment, the mice were given a compound which reduces their immunity along with saccharin which is harmless. So whenever this was done, the mice fell sick. But after sometime, they gave it simple saccharin and guess what? The mice fell sick again. Not only did they fall sick, but there was a dramatic decrease in their immunity levels!!! So how did that happen? Another example is the condition called MPD or multiple personality disorder which was made famous by the film ANNYAN. Most people know about it but there are some slight points which were missed by most of us. A person who suffers from MPD will have distinct or separate personalities but, did you know that they can have different physical characteristics too??? One personality may have short-sightedness while his alter personality might be 20/20 on vision.. One personality may be unable to light 20 KGs along while the other may find it a child’s play. How is this possible again? Another case similar to my friend’s case is an experiment in which people allergic to pollens where told that a plastic flower was real, most of them had a allergic reaction to that though absolutely NO pollen were present in the flower!!! All this are accounted for the ability of the mind to directly influence the body!

Now for the good part. A simple question here would be, Well can this be used in the opposite direction? Can the mind Heal the body? Can it help us? Yes… The mind can be used to help heal the body, something which has been happening for a long time but under a name called faith healing or miracle healing. Faith or complete trust can be defined as a process of convincing one inner subconscious of something. This is where I usually get the question of whether I am an atheist or not.. (NO COMMENTS). This post has nothing to do with god. But i assure you one thing, all the people who say or claim as being the faith healers are FAKE. But i would not exactly complain as they indirectly convince others mind to believe in them and that they could heal them. This concept of using the mind to heal or create physical changes in the body has been experimentally proven. It was tried with people with AIDS, where a mind experiment resulted in much improved levels of immunity. Although medical science is unable to pinpoint exactly how to trigger this, we know that if we beat around blindly enough times, we’re ought to hit the pot!!! So comes the question of whether we would be able to make ourselves believe like the mice mentioned earlier, where a sound of a bell can release jerk the body into remembering the tetanus shot we received some time back thus saving ourselves from the booster shots required every six months. Or maybe prevent the production of histamine which causes allergies in a similar way.. It would be pretty helpful. Some have actually been proved to work.

I have a tendency to believe it. I have not had an allergic reaction i can remember, nor do i get fever often. I am also devoid of headaches and other such symptoms. I do not take medicines too. Maybe all this is because I firmly believe that my body is capable of producing its own set of antibodies as and when required. Maybe somehow it has been translated into a physical form for me. I cannot be sure or confirm if this is true for me but science suggest and has proved that this is a true fact. That the mind can be over the body.

On a concluding note, I would want to my friends who experience this to try and convince their mind that they is not part of the ailing group (dont ask me how) !! Hopefully, you mind will heal you!!!

Hope you all find the doctors in you!!! J

End of World – Part 2

When the earlier post ended, reasons such as the galactic alignment, the mayan calendar etc were given which are all proved factors. This time, the points mentioned might not be proved exactly but are the result of a series of interpretations and logical conclusions, accepting these at face value or in any form of consideration is purely at the choice of the reader!!!

Lets start off with the so called Niburu theory. Niburu is believed to be a planet (Planet X as some call it), which has a very peculiar orbital path around the sun. This orbit might look something like that of a comet. It would look something like this but at a slight inclination from the axis.

The planet if it exists must have an orbit or approximately 3600 years around the sun. Now the most simplest question at this point would be that if this is not proved then why is it being mentioned. The planet is predicted to exist in the similar way as Black holes are predicted to exist. A bit of scientific knowledge will tell you that you cannot ‘see’ a black hole but you can ‘know’ where it is based on the behaviours of other bodies near it. Similarly, many factors including the comet based bombardment cycle of the earth gives enough proof for the existence of such a body. Now I don’t think its even required to explain the reaction of our planet to the arrival of a massive body as the planet Niburu if it gets close enough to us. There is a high speculation that the planet is arriving and that it would reach destructive distance in the year 2012 end. Well, the internet is filled with all kinds of nonsense as well as validated facts. Distinguishing them is the toughest part.. Keeping this above argument simple, I would just have to say that the above is a speculation since no one has actually given a proof of the existence of this planet.

Another similar argument is the so called ‘prediction’ that our solar system is a binary star system. A binary solar system is the one in which there are two suns rather than one. The solar structure would look something like this… Most planets in the solar system would have two sunrises and two sunsets. I know this sounds pretty sci-fi to most readers but the point here being, it may be true. Unlike what most people know about start, they are not always the bright shiny ball of fire which is visible even at light-years distance. There are what you call as brown stars, which by definition would be the so called stars which did not make it to the shiny stage.. You could call them the wannabe stars who flunked the star test!!!

According to some theories our solar system could have a brown star in it. Once which has a very elongated orbit implying it would enter our orbit only once in thousands of years. This is similar to the Niburu concept wherein the planet is replaced by a star roughly a fourth the size of the sun. The consequence of this theory is more spectacular than the Niburu theory especially due to the fact that, such a brown star has a tendency to light up when it closes on the primary star which is hot and bright, thus effectively frying the nearby planets.

Another factor which points to the end of the world, even if this planet or sun doesn’t mean us harm is from the face of the earth itself or from within it to be exact. Most of us must have heard of the yellow sands park in the United States. It is a place famous for its hot springs and other geological wonders. But ever wondered what lies below it??? Scientist claim that the yellow sands is the biggest and the bad-est volcano on the planet. Something you could call a super-volcano. And explosion at the yellow sands could mean a global atmospheric blackout for over a year or so. We would have to kind of live without the sun for a year!! In-short a sort of a limited ice-age. Why did I mention this? Well, if there is enough of a gravitational shift, then the ever so slightly balanced Yellow sands may pop. This too is a possibility!!!

Well at this stage, most people reading this would be either willing to strike back at me for this post or be willing to believe that the world is gonna end in 2012. But please hold on, I am not yet quite done.

The Niburu and the brown star theory might just not work out. See, according to the end of world date, we are approximately 1.5 years close to the apocalypse. If a star, half the size of the sun, was on its way to meet us, we should pretty much be feeling the same! There would be increased oceanic activity, atmospheric disruptions etc which would pop up very powerfully. The gravitational pull of the star would also alter or cause disruptions in the spin, tilt of earth which in turn would translate to hurricanes and earthquakes. The hurricanes at this point might make Katrina look like a sea breeze and the earthquakes could go well over 10 in the richer scale! So the whole chance of these things happening is really really low.

So now the question completes the circle and reach back to “so its not the end of the world after all, right?”, Frankly I don’t know. The odds and probabilities are too many to even come to a contrasted conclusion. Certain proofs say that something will happen, then some other things which comes as part of the proof package, is literally useless. But then again that does not imply that the whole set is a fake. From my point of view, I am sure that something will happen!!! I cannot predict whether its going to be good or bad. But the odds show that there is a higher probability for it to be bad, mainly due to the telekinesis factor of the millions who believe so and also due to some proofs which predict an incident!!!

But hey, look on the bright side.. We still have over an year to enjoy life!!!! J

End of world – Part 1

Even before you start reading this post; please re-consider whether you are sure you want to. This might be informative but depressing to some. All the points mentioned are facts and not meant in any form as a fictional article. I decided to write this due to a popular demand on the comment i recently posted on the influence of collective mindset towards the probability of this happening. And yes as most might have already guessed, I am writing about the 2012 saga which is a buzz as of now!. I don’t intend to go into the so called religious outlook of this like the biblical predictions or other so called prophets who had predicted this. I intend to touch up only on the scientific reasons which can actually be proved. So, well here it is!!!

So when did all this start? To get to the beginning of this whole prediction business, we will have to go back in time over 3000 years to 1000 BC. The mayan Civilization flourished in the central Americas between 1000 BC till around 900 AD. Now there are so many civilization which existed during this time but mayans became famous for their obsession with time and space. They were so obsessed that they created a calendar which consisted of interlocking components and which could predict the exact position of various planets and moons much into the future. This calendar is infamously known as the mayan Calender. The reason why this caught the scientist eye initially was the fact that, it was able to predict to over 99% accuracy the length of the Earth Year. Moreover it was able to accurately predict the lunar and solar cycles with enormous consistency even to this day. But what confused the scientists were that, the calendar stopped on December 23rd 2012. The mayans called this the great transformation where everything would change. The mayans also managed to predict the onset of a solar flare reversal in the year 2006, which happened on the 31st of July 2006 as per NASA officials. Even they agree that that particular reversal was very strange due to various reasons and stick to the fact that, the outcome of this particular reversal (called solar cycle 24) could be much more powerful than anything we’ve seen so far. Since the Mayan have a track recorded of zero errors, their prediction of a global Ending is pretty valid.

Next is line is the so called galactic alignment which gives basis to the next scientific reasoning. As most people know the Milky way galaxy in which our solar system resides in shape like a disc. What most people don’t know is why it is shaped like that. The reason why the Milky way is shaped like that is due to the presence of a massive Blackhole which is present at the center of the galaxy. This Blackhole along with the whole galaxy is spinning, and it is the combination of this spin and the Black hole which give our galaxy its spiral shape. Now how can it affect us? Gravitation as most of us learn is not a constant. Explanation of that would be really confusing and long, if done here. So lets just leave it at it is not. When a massive object spins, the gravitation varies around it with the highest being at the a region around its spin sides. This is why the disc exists. The whole point here being that the disc around the Black hole has a massive gravitational field difference. And once every 30 Million years, the earth and the sun falls into this disc. For a reference see this figure.

So what’s so special about this??? When such an alignment happens, the sun emits very powerful solar storms and proton winds which are very damaging to the earth. Yes, the earth’s magnetic field should protect us from the same but unfortunately this shield is not a impermeable one. If the storm is too powerful, then it may just shred the ionosphere apart. Other effects of this gravitational pull are many but nothing is proved or can be predicted. But to put something in perspective, the whole dinosaurs went extinct 70 million years ago!! Why am i talking about dinosaurs and blackholes now? Well, The next alignment is in 2012, December 21st 2012 to be exact!!!

Two reasons??? Thats it?? Well not exactly, there are more. Including the binary start system, the niburu planet, the government coverup etc etc. But I don’t want make it a long read. I shall Continue soon with the part 2 of this!!!

I shall do it before December 2012 for sure!!

Between all the Ds…

Most people are unaware of the common problem of the human mind or the brain for that matter. If you look at a simple statistics, there is less than .0001 % people on the planet who does not suffer from a psychological or neurological condition. With this statistic, I can say quite confidently that none of you (who’s reading this blog) in amongst that minority. Why I am writing this blog??? Well, I just wanted to take a couple of the most commonly found ‘issues’ (or gifts as i would put them) and prove, why they become an important part of you once you accept it!!! This has huge relevance while hiring or internally transferring the employees who work in your office. One could call it psychological placement!!! So here goes.

One of the most common forms of disorder found is the OCD, which most of you would know as the obsessive compulsive disorder. The common characteristic of people who are affected with this are their adherence to certain strict schedules and their constant fear of something deviating from this chain. A great example of this for the sitcom fans would be Sheldon from “the big bang theory’. Their ‘disadvantage’ would be their unwillingness to accept change and their multiple cross checking of a completed task repeatedly for discrepancies. A simple introspection by ourselves would be a good way to understand or figure out if there is a OCD guy inside us. A simple but not accurate diagnosis would be to ask yourself or your friend whether you overdo some relatively simple task. Like do you have an urge to wash your hands over and over again or do you feel compelled to check if the door or window is locked a multiple number of times? This compulsion need not be physical in nature, it could also be mental where in which you keep reminding or worrying yourself over and over in reference to something which has happened or which would happen. If you shift the point of view from a critic to a more positive one, you would notice that his particular trend is a wonderful thing to have in the case of a supervisor. If a supervisor or a manager for that matter has symptoms of OCD, he would be psychologically be tortured to see things not completed or to see that things are lagging behind schedule. Irritating as it maybe for the people working under him, the job will get done. To give extra credit to this is his irritation towards imperfection. In most cases it would involve him directly stepping on to the field whereas in others it would be nagging the person responsible for it till that is corrected, either way perfection becomes a part of the parcel. In the same context, it is important that you don’t put an OCD based person in the job of a innovative side or as a researcher (frankly they would not even be in that post unless compelled by an external force). I should probably through in a couple of minute points here like, you should avoid giving coffee or any caffeinated materials to these people coz it might turn out to be bad.

The second most common syndrome is ADD or ADHD which means Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Now as most of the people think, this is not the class of people who crave attention or who always want to be in the spotlight. That is an altogether different story. The reason why I had to specify this is coz, most people when they hear Attention and deficit, they immediately conclude that the guy craves for attention coz he feels he doesn’t get enough of it. Well NOT true. The simple rule of the thumb, is that all diseases are based on first person Not second or third. So its about what he feels, not what others feel. So what is ADD or ADHD? This is a condition in which a person is unable to concentrate or focus his attention of a particular thing for a sustained period of time. Edison is a good example of an ADHD. How do you recognize one of them or see if you too are gifted? One important characteristic is that they get bored really really fast. Secondly, they have a tendency to day dream a lot. Thirdly they do things impulsively and they just can’t stop talking. Another prominent point is that you think about a hundred things in the middle of doing something. In short, the insides of the head of a ADD or ADHDer would be chaos, there would be a 100 things which rapidly switch his focus pane. You could consider it similar to what you would feel if you look inside a hyper-threaded processor. This view, is the biggest advantage he has. See, most ADDs or ADHDs can Multitask very powerfully, by which i mean, beyond what most people are usually able to do. Although the perfection of this would depend a lot on how powerful is focus pane is. So someone which a good focus pane, can do several things like listen to music, read books, eat and talk on the phone at the same time, without breaking a sweat. Moreover this very same capability enables them to have a very unique outlook at everything around them in which they can see possibilities and probabilities which moves around in their head. This information overload confuses most of them, rendering them unable to plan into the future, which causes them to act impulsively. Now, how do we tame the lion? ADD or ADHDs make a brilliant Innovation team and pathetically bad managers. Get a group of ADDers to innovate a product and you would be shocked by the ideas pouring in. Make them a manager, where the job is repetitive, and you would find his performance taking a downward fall exponentially. Giving caffeinated drinks to an ADDer is a blessing in disguise as it would ‘calm’ them down. I would also like to give you tip which i found firsthand (since I suffer from ADHD). If you keep all his senses occupied and then assign him a job, you can see miracles happening. Reason: I think the most when I am driving, with music blaring and food in my mouth!

While most companies hire based on qualification, marks or reference, I rather think and look upon a psychological form of hiring. The human mind and brain is a wonderful thing. Understanding it and playing along with it would work wonders. While most people are unable to even imagine the insides of a gifted person, I being one of them can tell you that it feels really weird. Where in most people think, they feel… where most people learn, they derive… A simple way to put it is, Anyone familiar with Computer Vision Technology would know the issues or difficulty in implementing them. But think about our brain, which recognizes others face without us even trying. Ever noticed that its only when we ‘try’ to think that we have to really think.. if its a natural thing we do like seeing things, understating it, reading, recognizing… we just don’t bother think about it. It looks so easy. Now imagine people for whom innovating or managing is a natural thing. Something they do both in and out of their brains. Wouldn’t you want to have them??

I am not again hiring ‘normal’ people, but when you have natural people why hire the normal???

Superstition or coincidence!!!

I had never been religious or superstitious in my life. Although many psychologists say that people with ADHD are more or less unable to comprehend the concept of religion in its raw form, I believe that the reason why i do not believe in this is due to the science involved in the same. So why am i writing this?? Something strange was happening, the reason why i say strange is coz being someone who understands probability, certain things just cannot remain coincidences. Unlike many others, I never believe such things unless it happens to me.

So to set the perspective of the scenario, let me back up to January 2010. I and some of my colleagues were staying in a house near my workplace. The work was good, the money in the bank was good, and Life was great. Everything we wanted was happening. But then in the beginning of the month one of my colleague’s girl friend was supposed to relocate to our city, so he started searching for a house near to the office. Soon he found one and she shifted into the house along with her friend and her husband. The house was located in a strategic location, directly opposite to a bus terminal, right next to the national highway and in the town centre. The house in turn was really huge with four bedrooms and a huge lawn. The owner stayed right next door. He was the perfect landlord… friendly, charming and really helpful. The husband was a business man who was doing quite well too.

Within a couple of weeks of them shifting into the house, tensions started boiling up between my colleague and his girlfriend. Everyone considered it to be the ‘usual’ fight. But then the husband all of a sudden started losing out on his business with one by one of his contracts getting cancelled for no apparent reason. So soon he got the vaastu of the house checked and it seems the astrologer told him that the house is very very bad according to vaastu and practically threatened him citing the misfortune awaiting. Scared and superstitious as he might he decided to flee the house. Being totally un-superstitious, In what could be called as the perfect steal of the opened opportunity, we offered him our house and told him that we would shift to his house. He agreed instantly to the latter. So in the month of February we moved into THE HOUSE much to the dismay of my parents. We loved the house as it was spacious and everything we could ask for…

There were no crazy incidents or anything of that sort which would bring a twist to this.. I did lose the keys to my room and got locked out a couple of times. And one of my housemate seemed to have a allergic reaction to the house since he would start sneezing the moment he entered the house. But the most interesting thing was the strange attraction of insects towards his room, even though absolutely no entry point for the insects could be detected. But anyway as of today, we are still living in that house. But the blog post reason happened yesterday. I was running short of cash for some time now. My girlfriend and me broke up for no apparent reason. The most cash surplus people in the house were drowned in debt and even our workplace was going down. Yesterday, we were discussing and planning the payment of the rent when all of a sudden my colleague asked me when was it that we had moved into the house. I told him that it was in February of this year. I could see some kind of a realization flowing into his face, it was confirmed when he exclaimed the next second that it was the same month that our finance and other decline had started!!! He was right, there was a connection. So he immediately called up our colleague whose girlfriend had stayed there and told him of the discovery to which he got a reply “but do you believe in that?? The owner had stayed there and now he has built this new huge house next to it.. Don’t be superstitious.”.. When i heard that, I couldn’t resist correcting one slight detail, I told him “technically, the owner never stayed there. He was abroad his whole life and he came back only after the new house was built implying that he never stayed in this house”. The very next second he screamed GET OUT OF THE HOUSE.. Don’t think, just do it…

So, at night, I told my parents about this incident to which they told me that they were hoping to talk to me about this as they too doubted it. I was also given an example of a house near my brother in law’s place which shared similar characteristics but with more gruesome results. Seemingly of all the family who has stayed there, someone has always died!!! WOW.. That seemed dangerous. The conversation had to be ended with a promise to move out of the house.

So why the blog.. Probabilistically what had happened there cannot be accounted as a coincidence. Since there were eight people involved and all of them had experienced this fall. Now eight people having issues at the same time is perfectly, but how about all eight of them having only one thing in common and the time is oriented around the period of stay in the house. At this point most people reading the blog would be ready to acknowledge that Ninja has become superstitions.. Well I have not. Nor do I believe the superstition. I just wanted to give the scientific reason for the same. I want to project how I see this!

Vaastu as some would say is proven scientifically. I can support that notion quite easily. It could be seen simply in the form of a simple example. Imagine sitting in a train, any person would feel more comfortable facing the direction of the travel rather than an opposite one. Some may argue saying I don’t care. But if given an option to sit either way, anyone would prefer facing the direction of movement. Similarly vaastu is more oriented towards alignment in the direction of motion of the earth. There are various other scientific arguments including enabling better blood flow taking into consideration the earth’s spin etc. But all this has nothing to do with the financial capacity of a person or the deals/ contract which a person might have in his business. Vaastu as well as feng shui deals in the metaphysical translation or altering of energy. All this can translate to is towards probably making you wake up a wee bit more fresh or give you a good night’s sleep. All other claims are Hokum in theory.

So if this is the case then how come these things happen??? To start off with an explanation for this, We first need to know something about Noetic Science or the Noetic theory. This is nothing but a metaphysical branch of study which deals mainly in the concept of mind and intuition. This is something which has started gaining popularity recently due to proofs being generated in the near past. Noetic theory predicts something called as Psychokinetic phenomenon, more commonly known as telekinesis aka Mind over matter. Now I am not talking science fiction here. Psychokinetic capabilities have been proven but not in the manner which most people reading it would imagine. Science fiction tells us that Psychokinesis is all about lifting chairs and desks or even creating force fields etc. But that is not what is meant by Psychokinesis here. To explain it in a real world scenario lets consider flipping of a coin. The result can be either heads or tails, the probability of each being ½ = 0.5. Now if this random experiment is conducted enough times, the distribution curve would tend to settle down with 0.5 probability each. But now consider and Psychokinesis based random experiment of similar nature. In this, we do the same flipping of the coin but this time we have around 20 people who are watching this and who are told that the next flip will be a heads. So 20 people subconsciously believe the next flip to be a heads (subconscious belief is required since that is considered to be the most powerful mental segment of a human being.). Most of us don’t expect anything to happen. But Noetic science proves that if such an experiment is conducted then the probability of getting a heads during the toss is higher than 0.5. This, is Psychokinesis altering the probability distribution.

So from the above explanation, what I intend to put across is the fact that most superstition which results in a coincidental happening has nothing to do with the superstition but more to do with our mind. If a black cat crosses you, it does not signify that something bad will happen to you, but since our sub-conscious mind believes a bad incident, it will create a probability shift towards something bad to happen given it a higher chance of happening. We then naturally blame it on the superstition.

To prove this more, lets see a simple example. In some cults, cutting a banana is considered to be a bad omen as it signifies cutting the cross. But we never knew it, atleast most of us did not. We would have cut bananas a lot of times and has bad luck befallen us??? But now that I’ve told you this if you cut a banana, there is a good chance than something bad might happen. So technically the implied fact is that its all in your head. Coming back to the house, If the house is given to a new person who has never heard of Vaastu or who did NOT know about the vaastu issues of the house, the probability that he would have a misfortune is comparatively less. The reason why I said Less is coz, the people who believe the house is bad luck would still shift probability towards misfortune for him coz thats what our mind tells us.. It kind of like comes the whole way around!!!

To Conclude, an interesting outlook from this… Too many people believe that December 23 2012 will be the end of the world (for those who don’t, I shall be writing about its ramifications soon). It is kind of embedded in our minds. So if a sixth of the population believes this then we have one billion subconscious mind shifting probability towards an apocalypse.. We are screwed big time aint it??? J

Travelling in the Fourth Dimension – Paradoxes

In the earlier post, there was a mention of paradoxes. For those who are quite unaware of paradoxes let me give explain what is means. It may be defined as a sentence or a group of sentence which leads to a contradiction or situation which defies logic. Lets see it in the form of an example, ie. If I say the following statement “When i dropped the phone it went up and down at the same time”. Now this statement is not logical as, the phone cannot go up and down at the same time since it would do only one of the movements in a given time frame. The biggest reason why time travel is a confusing concept for everyone is due to the many paradoxes it presents. Lets see how we can look at those.

The Clock Symmetry Paradox

    Now
In special relativity, clocks slow down by a factor of 1/sqrt(1-v2), sometimes called the “time dilation factor” or “gamma”, Where v is the relative velocity of the subject as per the observer. But according to the principle of relativity as used in special relativity, any uniformly moving observer will see the same effects if they consider themselves to be at rest. Therefore, if two observers are moving, each relative to the other, then each will “see” the other observer’s clock “running slow”. Now relative velocity implies that they need not be necessarily moving in the same direction! But isn’t this a paradox? After all, how can it be that both A’s clock is ticking slower than B’s clock and B’s is ticking slower than A’s?

No, it’s not a paradox, not if you can explain it. The resolution is because of the fact that the relationship of one space-time coordinate system to another in special relativity is mathematically a kind of rotation. It is the same effect one would get if one had two x-y coordinate systems, and there was an angle between the two x axes. Consider this diagram, of two x-y coordinate systems, one with coordinate axes rendered in blue, the other with coordinate axes rendered in red.

Now, let’s build a brick wall along each of these two x axes. The analogy here is, each brick in the wall is analogous to a clock tick along the timeline of a moving observer in special relativity(a clock tick can be a second, a minute or any form of periodic event which is constant). Consider a person using the red coordinate system to compare x-length of red and blue bricks.

We can see that somebody using the red coordinate system will think the x-extent of the blue bricks is less than the x-extent of the red bricks, and at the very same time, looking at the very same bricks, somebody using the blue coordinate system will think the x-extent of the red bricks is less than the x-extent of the blue bricks. ( Look at the comparison lines drawn. Basic Cartesian coordinate system rules say that measurement in any axis should be taken in alignment with the coordinates, which is exactly how we are doing the calculation in the given diagram).

Grand-father Paradox

Now this is more of an interesting and a real life imaginable kind of a paradox. Now consider this scenario. You go back in time around 100 years, then find out where you grandfather lives and then you do something which prevents him from meeting your grandmother which results in him marrying someone else other than your granny. This would imply that your father/mother did not exist and thus implies that You do not exist. If that is the case, then how can you meddle with this whole scene in the first case? This simple paradox is known by various name including the billiard ball paradox, the grandmother paradox etc etc.

To understand the paradox further and to see an possible resolution for the same check the picture below.

In the first pic, the same paradox is shown as a billiard ball version. The worm-hole shown is nothing but a form of a time travel which we could discuss later. Now, if a ball was fired into the entry of an time machine, and it exits the machine in such a way that it knocks the original ball (remember that the ball is travelling back in time), thus preventing it from entering the time machine in the first place. This is similar to the grandfather paradox. The resolution to this can be seen from a more simple perspective in the second diagram but is quite difficult to accept. The claim of resolution being that nature will permit the ball to exit only in such manner that the it does not hit the incoming ball at all.

Before we jump into conclusion, this can be shown mathematically using probability theory. Consider the probability that the exiting ball will hit the entering version of it as X. Now using simple probability law, we could say that X=1-Y, where Y is the probability of the ball not hitting and 1 is the maximum probability. Calculation of Y based on conditional probability itself would be very tough and would approximately near Infinity (chance of ball getting stuck + chance of ball exploding+ etc etc). This would imply that the probability of the ball hitting it is almost 0, which is next to impossible. What scientists claim is that nature would shift probability in such a way that, no matter what the ball will not hit itself.

PERSONAL VIEW: I don’t or can’t accept the scientist view, coz of one reason mainly. A slight modification of this scenario would render me a super-human provided the scientist views are correct. Consider this scene, where I come back in time but NOT alone, I time-travel with my son. Once in the past, I could do anything to try and get myself killed but I just would not die, since If I die then how can my son who is with me exist? So nature should technically prevent me from dying at all costs, implying that I am a super human with the only weakness being my son. So I don’t think this probability play is a resolution to the grandfather paradox.

Another resolution which is provided by the scientists is an adherence to the multiverse theory. According to this theory, there exists not one universe, but an infinite number of parallel universe which will contains every possibility of events. For example, there could be a universe in which I do not write this blog, or one in which I might even die writing this blog. So when I travel back in time, I do not travel back in time to this universe, but I travel back to a universe where things would be as it fits. So if I go and kill my grandfather, it will NOT affect my universe but another universe where already my grandfather was dead and there did not exist me, in the first place. In my original universe, I would just be missing from my present!!! This is a more acceptable version of the theory but a bit too hokum as the number of combinations of the universes would be too much to even imagine…

PERSONAL VIEW: I kind of somewhat like the above theory, but then the implications are huge. I would rather stick to a modified version of the same, which is a kind of a triggered multiverse theory. In this, a secondary universe is created only when a time travel is initiated, implied that the Time travel triggers a mirroring of the existent universe to a parallel one, between whom the time travel machine is the bridge. Any change which is made there, only affects the other universe and not the original one. So if I were to travel and kill my grandfather, then there would be a parallel universe in which I don’t exist but if i return back to the exact time of me travelling, then I will return to my own universe where, I will be existing since, I did not kill anyone in my past. Effectively speaking, I just would not be able to change everyone’s present, but would just be given a choice of living in the past, I chose to create. I can be visualized from the diagram shown below.

In the above diagram, the red line indicates the original universe in which you live. If you use a time machine to travel back into the past, you create a parallel universe represented by the blue line. Now the green line represents the path you took to reach here, if you take any other part than this one, you end up creating yet another universe. So if you have to return to your universe, the only way is the green route. Now if you kill you grandfather or if you get killed at this point, the Blue universe just would not have you. Everything else would work out perfectly well. Now moreover, if you return back after killing your grandfather (through the green route), you will reach back the red universe where you as well as your grandfather had existed. But if you choose to live in the blue universe, then you will have a normal existence with probably a double version of you, in case you don’t mess with your creation. This hypothesis would very clearly give a clear resolution to the grandfather paradox. We might be living in the red universe, or maybe in a parallel universe created by someone due to his time travel. We just don’t know. Moreover, that would also explain why no one has gone into the past and changed anything, coz even if someone did, it would not make any difference to us. This simple solutions is the reason why I came up with this triggered multiverse theory. (the analogy to this would be us creating a copy of crucial data provided we intend to mess with it. The copy never affects the original no matter what we do with it!)….

Now that the paradoxes are done, How we intend to do it will come soon. Till then think whether a modified version of matrix is really how the world is existing now…

Travelling in the 4th Dimension – Part 1

The notion of time travel in various forms has existed probably for as long as humans have been able to ponder time itself. Legends of prophecies (which ultimately involve information moving from the future to the past) are as old as humanity itself. Though various method of time travel has been put up both in the world of science fiction and in theoretical physics, the base question still remains unanswered. Is it possible? Most people would not even want to believe that something as crazy as time travel would exist mainly because they just simple cannot imagine it. One simple question… How on earth is that possible? Let’s start by defining time itself.

What Is Time, Anyway?

The more one thinks about time travel, the more one is brought up against fundamental concepts of being. What exactly do we mean by “time”, anyway? The simplest definition I’ve heard has been “that which keeps everything from happening at once”, but while amusing and logically implicative, it’s hardly satisfying as a definition.

Time is probably best thought of as a dimension, an extent. Objects have length, breadth, depth, and duration. Even in day-to-day life, people intuitively understand this. When you want to meet someone, you tell them where (locating a spot in three physical dimensions) and when (locating a spot in a time dimension). To specify an event, we need all four dimensions. This leads to the common statement, usually unexamined, that “time is the fourth dimension”. What does this actually mean? To simplify this lets look at this with reference to a real world example: the flip book model…

Have you ever seen a “flip book”, or made one? This is a simple kind of animation that even a child can understand. You draw frames of a sequence in the margins of a book, like the individual frames of an animated cartoon. Then you rapidly flip through the pages, and the drawings seem to move. For example, the animation might consist of a frog that hops up and comes back down. Each drawing has the frog in a slightly different position. Perhaps the initial and final images are the same, in which it would become a circular flip book. Consider the “flip book” world. It has two dimensions – the length and breadth of the pages. It also has a “time” dimension – the thickness of the book. Each two-dimensional instant (an individual drawing on a particular piece of paper) is arranged in three dimensions. When you flip through the book, you scoot along the time dimension of the flip book. Consider the frog in our hypothetical flip book. It jumps up, and comes down again, returning to the same spot. But, actually, it doesn’t return to exactly the same point – it’s the same point in terms of the two dimensions of the page, but it’s displaced in the third direction, perpendicular to the pages.

Now, we can extend this model to our world. We can imagine that our universe consists of three-dimensional moments arranged in a four- dimensional sequence. Even if we walk in a circle, we haven’t returned to the same point – it’s the same point in the three space dimensions we normally use, but it’s displaced in the fourth, time dimension. Note that this is exactly the model used by General Relativity. The universe, which we normally think of as being made of “space” and “time”, is actually a single something called “space-time”. In Einstein’s view, the world really is a four-dimensional flip book, and time really is, in a real sense, another measure of distance. Time normally proceeds at the speed of light – one second ago is one light-second (186,000 miles; 300,000 kilometers) away. As Einstein himself said, “Past, present, and future are illusions, if stubborn ones.” More interestingly, “space-time” is warped by matter and energy (or really, “mass-energy”, one substance with different aspects). If one follows the current equations to their limits, they imply some very odd consequences, which we shall explore later. People are quite familiar with the space-time continuum, thanks to various science fiction books, movies and documentaries but are quite illiterate about the hidden secrets they withhold.

Time Travel???

    Time Travel Into the Future

Time travel to the future is no big deal. Heck, we’re always doing it automatically. It doesn’t lead to any paradoxes or any really unusual consequences. It might be nice from a practical or educational standpoint to get to the future faster than one second per second, but it doesn’t bend the brain the way travel into the past does. We can think of several ways today to travel into the future. You can either fake it with some form of suspended animation, or go for the gusto and spend some time going fast, preferably as close to the speed of light as possible. (I didn’t say they were trivial, but we can think of ways to do them with some not so currently available technology.) Moreover, it is at this point that most people think or fantasize about stopping time. From what I understand, I don’t think it is possible to stop time as such, you can only accelerate yourself to an as-close-as possible speed of light thus making time appear to have stopped for you. Now psychological implications of whether you will be able to accelerate you brain activity also to that speed is highly questionable, still everything is worth a try, isn’t it?

Time Travel into the Past

This one is the confusing part. Imagining it, itself, would break down most people’s mental boundaries. Let’s see it as an example. Imagine a Boeing 737 flying at 500 MpH. Now imagine it flying at 10000 MpH. I am guessing both pictures would have formed quite comfortably in your mind. Now try imagining the same hovering in mid air like a helicopter. Tough??? Now try to think the plan flying backwards at 500 MpH… this is exactly the problem with time travel. But as always nothing is impossible. Since mass-energy can alter space-time, theorists have found several ways that might allow travel into the past. None of them have been experimentally verified, but none of them are ruled out by any known means either logically implying that one of these methods might actually work.

Everyone knows the relativity equation proposed by Einstein. Using the concept of rest mass and relativistic momentum, the total energy of a particle would be where V is the velocity of the particle and m, the mass. Re arranging the equation we get mass would be a factor multiplied by the square root of C2-V2. This segment implies that if the V is bigger than C, then the value is negative. And simple mathematics would tell you that you cannot have the square root of a negative number. Now again, more advanced mathematics would tell you that if you have the imaginary number ϊ defined as the square of (-1) (Note that the term “imaginary” is not pejorative, any more than quarks actually have color or flavor. Imaginary numbers are used for real every day in electrical engineering). The implication of this statement would be that the mass of the particle would have to be negative. More easily put “Objects that have real mass travel slower than light. Objects with zero mass travel at precisely the speed of light.” And, maybe, “objects with imaginary mass travel greater than the speed of light.” What a particle with imaginary mass would look like isn’t clear. None have been detected or generated so far. But such a particle would, according to Relativity, move faster than light. And it’s possible to show that if things can travel faster than light, they can in some circumstances travel back in time.

The entire “FTL (Faster than light) implies time travel” meme has to do with what’s sometimes called “failure of simultaneity at a distance”. In addition to the effects that pop treatments of relativity mention (that is, time dilation and length contraction), relativity proposes that the definition of “right now” is also different, depending on which observer’s coordinate system you use. This is an effect much like the revolution of deciding that the direction “up” wasn’t the same everywhere, but varied from place to place on earth. With relativity, the revolutionary notion is that the direction “futureward” (or “now-ward”) isn’t the same everywhere, and varies with velocity of the observer. This is quite confusing so lets visualize it yet again.

Consider a duel with tachyon pistols (not the star wars one.. in this case pistols which fire tachyon particles). The plan being that two duelists, A and B, are to stand back to back, then start out at 0.866 light speed for 8 seconds, turn around, and fire. So, the duelists both set out — at 0.866 light speed each relative to the other, so that the time dilation factor is 2 between them (implying that 1 second is seen as half a second by the other one). Duelist A counts off 8 lightseconds, turns, and fires. Now, according to A (since in relativity all inertial frames are equally valid) B’s the one who’s moving, so B’s clock is ticking at half-speed. Thus, the tachyon round hits B in the back as B’s clock ticks 4 seconds. Now B (according to relativity) has every right to consider A as moving, and thus, A is the one with the slowed clock. So, as B is hit in the back at tick 4, in outrage at A’s firing before 8 seconds are up, B manages to turn and fire before being overcome by his fatal wound. And since in B’s frame of reference it’s A’s clock that ticks slow, B’s round hits A, striking A dead instantly, at A’s second tick; a full six seconds before A fired the original round. Now the question remains, why did A have to fire coz he would not be hit by B bullet as B is dead just two seconds after the duel started. This example show one of the most famous and significant paradox of time travel called the Grandfather paradox. It is due to the fact that, in Special Relativity, the question of what occurs at the “same time as” something else is observer dependent.

As A fired that first show at tick 8, the bullet effectively teleported from A’s gun to B’s back instantly — instantly according to A. But for B, who was moving at 0.866 lightspeed with respect to A, B was hit in the back by the bullet 4 seconds BEFORE the bullet was fired. And again note, this is NOT due to the optical illusion of lightspeed delay in viewing A’s turn-and-shoot; the light form that event wouldn’t reach B until MUCH later, not tick 4. Here’s a spacetime diagram of a referee (O3) and two duelists (O1 and O2). Space is up/down, time is left/right, in the diagram.

The paths O1 and O2 take through space-time are the blue and Green colored arrowed lines. The events in space-time that each considers “simultaneous” and “8 seconds after the start” are along the thinner, non-arrowed blue and green lines. So we see that, each of the three observers thinks the other two have slow clocks, and that if we are allowed to move faster than a lightcone, we’ll end up going “pastward” in somebody’s reckoning. (It means that what you do at a time would be seen as only a smaller time period by someone else, remember time dilution???) We can trace out the shots on this diagram, also. Step through it one more time: if green shoots at 8 seconds out, the shot will go along the green “line of simultaneity”, and hit blue at 4 seconds elapsed. If blue returns fire from there, it will return along a line parallel to the blue “line of simultaneity”, and catch green napping at 2 seconds elapsed (this is not shown in the diagram.).

I am guessing its been confusing enough now.. will be continued in further parts.
